Album Review: “Kingdom Torn Asunder” by Ironflame

Countdown To Ironflame - Kingdom Torn Asunder | Release Date

Ohio’s Ironflame have come to conquer once again with its fifth record, Kingdom Torn Asunder. The band roars from the outset with “Blood and Honor” with its bellicose double bass drums and swarming guitar riffs. Guitarists Quinn Lukas and Jesse Scott throw out several phrases and harmonies before ripping up some virtuous soloing. Soul Survivors” has a nice galloping riff that continues to drives the album forward. Frontman Andrew D’Cagna’s vocals soar over the track as he proclaims “We are the soul survivors” in the chorus. The baroque midsection and weaving guitar solos give added flair to this track.

There is an 80s feel on “Mistress of Desire” with its stomping guitar riff and simple mid paced tempo. It is a straightforward tune that fits well after the metal storm that comprises the opening third of Kingdom. Ironflame speed things up once more on “Standing Tall” which gives me Haunt vibes with its melodramatic guitar work and fast tempo. The slow, heavy riff during the midsection provides a nice build up to a ripping guitar lead. “Sword of a Thousand Truths” is a grooving track reminiscent of early Dio. The main riff is filled with attitude as it plods along like a warrior through a dark cave with sword in hand to vanquish a supernatural foe.

The CD version of Kingdom features two bonus tracks, including “Cold Flesh Falls.” I really enjoy the slow swinging tempo and slicing riffs as it creates a sense of gripping urgency on the song.

Kingdom Torn Asunder walks the fine line of vintage and modern as it offers an updated twist on traditional heavy metal. The guitar work is fancy but not over the top, which songwriting is dynamic with a degree of technicality. Each track is under six minutes long and the album is cohesive and flows well. The production is clear, and the drums and guitar never sound muddled.

Fans of Haunt, Dio, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Burning Witches and power metal in general will enjoy Kingdom Torn Asunder. Ironflame do not reinvent the wheel, but give it a polish and a minor update. The kingdom may fall, but we may as well bang our heads midst the destruction.
