The London based trio, Bear’s Den, opened for Daughter at Variety Playhouse in the heart of Little Five Points in Atlanta on Friday, Sept. 20 for a night full of indie infused music. With a unique blend of folk and rock, Bear’s Den performed songs off of their 2013 Agape, like “Mother,” along with newer material, like “Sahara.” Some of the crowd favorites were “The Waters,” “Pompeii” and “Don’t Let The Sun Steal You Away.”

There is something magical, almost ethereal-like about not only listening to Daughter’s music, but soaking up a live performance feels like returning home. There is something about being in a room full of fans that are intently absorbing every nuance of their music. By collectively being part of the swell of utter silence during each song, only to spontaneously erupt into applause at the end of the last note was all but an eviscerating experience.
That’s how it was Friday night when Daughter took the stage at Variety Playhouse and made you feel as if you were drifting on a cloud, unattached from your body as Daughter performed songs off If You Leave, like “Landfill,” “Candles,” “Shadows,” “Human,” “Smother,” “Youth” and “Home.” The song that stole the night away was actually the encore, where Daughter performed a cover of Daft Punk’s mega-hit “Get Lucky.” Making it more of a moody piece, stripping it down to the bare essentials and less of a dance vibe to it, but utterly stunning as if Elena Tonra’s voice gave life to the song.
I have never seen a crowd so engorged on a live performance before. It was as everyone was under a an unconscious spell, holding their breath in fear it would all end at any moment and not wanting to miss one second of it. At the end of each song, Tonra would delicately thank the crowd with a quiet smile.
As fantastic as Daughter’s recorded music is, and it is, they blow away the listener with a live performance that supersedes If You Leave with a moody, somber note that shreds your soul and stitches it back together again.
