The Tak Matsumoto Group returns with its newest album in 20 years, TMG II. The super group comprised of guitar virtuoso Tak Matsumoto, vocalist Eric Martin of Mr. Big, bassist Jack Blades of Night Ranger and former Guns n’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum, put their collective rocking talent to good use on this album. “Crash Down Love” is a swinging rocker with punchy piano keys that add a little swag to the track. Tak’s guitar riffs are big and simple, and he throws out a brief, yet cocky solo. “Eternal Flames” is a dance metal track with Baby Metal as special guests. The fast paced lyrics sound a bit off rhythm as Eric sounds like he’s behind tempo. Things slowdown for the solo which is the best part of this track. However, this song is a little banal. J-pop artist LiSA guests on “The Story of Love” which has a nice groove and slight electronic sound. The bluesy guitar lead complements the song without being over the top. “Jupiter and Mars” is a swaying, hard rocker with some eerie guitar interludes that add to the dark vibe on this song. Tak unleashes a fiery lead reminiscent of the late Gary Moore, making this an enjoyable track. “Dark Island Woman” is one of the heavier tracks on TMG II, with a progressive edge due to the tempo changes and guitar work. “Guitar Hero” aptly closes the album, as it perfectly describes Tak Matsumoto. The guitar work is sick and concludes the album in epic fashion.
TMG II is an album of hits and a few misses. The quartet certainly has the musical chops and it is on point, it is on point. Unfortunately, some of the tracks drag on or they are a bit cliché. Still, TMG II is enjoyable due to the guitar work and the album’s stronger tracks. The production is clear and loud, with near perfect instrument clarity.
TMG II will appease fans of Tak Matsumoto as he plays great on the album. It is disjointed at times and a couple of tracks are filter, but it is a fun album overall. It is worth the 20 years wait, but hopefully the next release will come sooner.
