Alpine was originally scheduled to open for the electronic rock duo, Empire of the Sun on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the Tabernacle in downtown Atlanta, but had to cancel at the last minute due to their van breaking down on the way to the venue. Alpine did a shout out on Facebook, saying “Sorry Atlanta, our van broke down and we can no longer make it to the show with Empire of the Sun! Instead we are driving 20 hours to New Orleans…life is cray! Doin it for the music x.” Instead, a DJ spun for nearly 90 minutes, warming up the colorfully embellished crowd. Fans adorned themselves in face make-up and head wear that emulated glam rockers Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore better known as Empire of the Sun.
Empire of the Sun has such loyal following of fans, as they are willing to travel great distances to get a chance to see the Australian duo perform live with such enormous theatrics. With a continuous string of costume changes, head pieces, make-up, dazzling lights, dancers and of course I would be amiss if I didn’t mention the music that drew fans like Usher and Jeff Daniels, along with other cast members from “Dumb & Dumber 2,” into the “Tabby” last night.
Empire of the Sun performed tracks off their recently released Ice on the Dune and of course fan favorites off their debut album, Walking on a Dream. The set included “Lux,” “Old Flavours,” “DNA,” Celebrate,” “Ice on the Dune,” “Walking on a Dream,” “Tiger by My Side” and “Alive.”
This is what performance art should look, taste and feel like. What an over-the-top, passionate, embellished, Avant-garde presentation that took music, art, dance and breathed life into it with such fierceness. The show was beyond impressive. I can truly say I have never seen a concert like this before.
